Behind the Scenes

People talk a lot about hidden things, usually sinister things, that influence government.  I’m sure few would doubt the influence of lobbyists, money, backroom deals, hidden power brokers, etc.  Note: recently an American senator was convicted of bribery.  Money is a big factor in elections and political decisions.

But I want to talk about influences at a deeper level beyond that, at a spiritual level. 

In the Old Testament God blessed or didn’t bless Israel based on Israel’s faithfulness.  While people make so much out of the economy, foreign policy, the skills of politicians, a biblical view calls us to pay attention to righteousness and morality. 

In the New Testament, we read of principalities and powers (Ephesians chapter 6)–unseen powers of good and evil that originate ultimately in God or Satan. 

Some choose not to believe it (probably because these forces are unseen).  But if it’s true, shouldn’t we be paying attention to it?  Shouldn’t we be paying attention to what God thinks? 

In my novel, Spirit of the Times, which is my most political novel, I try to examine the hidden forces that influence American government.

In the first part of the book the main character, Olaf Taylor and his wife, Christy, are visiting the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC.  They note the words from Jefferson’s speeches etched in stone on the walls.  Olaf is stunned by how many references to a Providence and Creator there are.  He is surprised because he knew that Jefferson was not orthodox in his Christian beliefs, yet he still showed that he had a God-mindset.  We could call it a God-based assumption or worldview.  This was a good thing for the general welfare of society. 

But then there was a big reset.  It happened in the 1960’s.  That was the decade when we seemed to shift from a God-centered morality (the Bible as a generally accepted ‘Good Book’), a favorable view of the 10 Commandments, moral truths that come from God, etc.) to a self-centered morality. 

God became replaced with self.  One’s own opinions, rather than God’s truth, became our moral center. 

It seemed to effect not just America, but all western societies at the same time. 

The reset didn’t seem too bad at the time.  It didn’t seem too disastrous.  There was a delay it its effects.  We’ve had sixty years for that self-centered worldview to develop. 

How’s it been working for us?  It’s been sixty years since the reset.  That’s time enough to give it an evaluation. 

In a later chapter of my book mentioned above, Olaf Taylor confronts his tormenter, the billionaire philanthropist Phil Annam.  Annam is arrogant and supremely confident.  He’s fully bought in to the reset and gleefully promotes it.  He tells Taylor:

You have no idea how easy it is to get people to believe things.  I can see it: ‘Olaf Taylor, the lone truth-telling fool’.  Go ahead, tell them what you saw, tell them everything.  We hope you do.  But remember, we have been winning friends for a long time.  We made a lot of groups addicted to our support.  Do you think they’ll do anything but agree with us and say nice things about us?  We’ve been doing our conditioning long enough, softening the public up long enough, and we’ve won over all the institutions of America–all of them!  We are just riding the wave of the spirit of the times.  You know, it didn’t used to be so easy.  We couldn’t have done it thirty years ago.  But the decline of Christianity has made the collapse of the moral center possible. 

And, in the book, the story goes on to tell how Phil Annam is himself unwitting controlled by a greater evil force. 

And maybe he’s right, the decline of Christianity in the western world made it possible. 

There is more going on in government than a sincere desire to win votes. 

Some things about the spiritual warfare:

1) There are two forces: God and Satan.  Sure, there are intermediaries, but it ultimately filters back to a source being God or the devil.

2) It is almost entirely unseen.  It is spiritual, not material, therefore some may dismiss it as a myth. 

3) There is usually a time delay in its effects.  

Sixty years into the reset…it has taken us to places we would never have guessed.  Let me give three examples, all coming out of the transgender movement. 

1. Just a few days ago there was a Satanic, blasphemous parody of Jesus and the Last Supper, featuring drag queens, at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris.  This was done before a world audience. 

2. Gavin Newsom, governor of California and rumored to have presidential ambitions, just enacted a law that would ban teachers in public schools from telling parents of children their preferred pronouns if the children should identify as something other than their biological gender.  The government of our largest state (and my native state) is actively working to undermine the family.  No one, absolutely no one, thought we would come to this.  But this is where we are. 

3.  The unthinkable is also happening to women’s sports, which are gradually being destroyed because men are allowed to ‘identify’ as women, compete against women, and clean up the trophies.  This is theft.  It is unfair.  It is morally wrong.  And yet, despite sane voices of protest, they still press on.  This movement, insane and evil as it is, seems impossible to stop. 

Sixty years ago these things would have been unthinkable, but now they are promoted at high levels.

Do these things appear to come from a merely human origin?  I don’t believe they do.  They have help from the evil side of the principalities and powers. But human beings have definitaly played a part in cooperating with those powers.

The wrecking ball of sin just keeps swinging because sixty years ago western societies threw out a God worldview and replaced it with self. 

I ask again: How has that been working for us?
